“How do you know if it’s from God?” This is the question that I always get from new believers and even pre-believers. Before I answer this, let me tell you first what are the three types of God’s will.
1. The Sovereign Will
This is God’s eternal and all-encompassing will that’s beyond our understanding. This answers questions like:
a. Why am I born a Filipino?
b. Why was he born blind?
c. Why he created the world?
2. The Revealed Will
This is God’s will revealed in the scriptures.
For example, God’s command is for us to love Him with all of our heart, soul and strength.
“Love your neighbour as yourself” – Matthew 22:39
“Give thanks in all circumstances” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18
3. The Permissive Will
This is what God allows to happen because of our own free will.
This is why sometimes we suffer because of the consequences from our own decisions or from the decisions of other people.
If there’s one thing that the Holy Spirit doesn’t interfere, it is our free will. He can guide but it’s up to us to listen and be discerning.(*Another blog for this specifically)
So now back to the question How do you know if it’s God’s will? Or in other words How do you know if it’s from the Holy Spirit?
1. First really is we have to know God’s word bec it is where God reveals His will.
The difference between the bible and the rest of the other books is that the word of God is living and active. When you read it, it’s either you get inspired, empowered or convicted.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12
2. You have to receive the Holy Spirit
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” – John 14:26
*I will talk about the Holy Spirit in more detail in another blog.
3. You test it.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2
How?
a. time
Let it simmer…
“For there is a proper time and a right way to do everything, even though people are burdened by their troubles.” – Ecclesiastes 8:6
b. motive
Ask yourself these questions:
What motivates my decision? Am I doing this bec of pride? Is this coming from a lust of the eye? (material gain) Is this coming from a lust of the flesh? (physical drive)
c. faith
“For without faith it is impossible to please God” – Hebrews 11:6
Will my decision please God? Will this make my faith grow? Or am I settling because of fear or even logic?
d. peace
Here’s a diagram of what peace feels like:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27
e. fruit
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
– Galatians 5:22-23
*This will be explained in detail in another blog about the Holy Spirit.
Just like how you would easily recognize your parent’s voice, that’s also how you do with God if you have a relationship with Him. This is really a controversial topic so if you’re new to your faith, it’s wise to seek Godly counsel with someone you can trust and explain this to you.
Disclaimer: I’m writing this based on my walk with God and as someone who has studied in Asian Theological Seminary. If you disagree with some of these thoughts, it’s okay. If you want to learn more, you can always message me. 🙂
